Golf instruction has truly come a long way since the early days of golf in
the Scottish lowlands. Prior to 1848, golf ball construction was a laborious
and costly art practiced by a handful of cottage manufacturers in the
vicinity of Edinburgh. The game was played only locally where the “golf
instruction” was simply imitating the great players of the day on the
handful of courses that were in existence. With the invention of the cheap,
exportable “guttie” ball, golf courses expanded to England, Ireland, France,
and India. The flowering of formal golf instruction began when the new golf
associations hired full-time professionals to undertake the task of teaching
golf to new golfing enthusiasts. The first book of golf instruction, A Keen
Hand, by H. B. Farnie was published in 1857. Golf instruction in the 1800’s
was primarily concerned about whether an open stance or a closed stance was
the better way to address the guttie golf ball that was so difficult to put
into the air. The development of the modern wound golf ball changed the
long-running stance disagreement when introduced in the early 1900’s. Since
that time, there doesn’t seem to be any aspect of ball-striking or mental
technique that hasn’t come under the scrutiny of golf instruction. Golf
magazines with articles on golf instruction also appeared around this time,
although golf professionals would continue to dominate golf instruction
right up to the Great Depression. In the mid-1950’s, largely due to
television, a new golf boom began and the PGA tour took off. Golf’s
expansion in the 1960’s and 1970’s resulted in a large enough golf economy
to allow for substantial investment by golf manufacturers in research and
development and the 1990’s saw a proliferation of many golf training aids.
Today golf instruction in the U.S. has
exploded to the point where there are now a multitude of national
golf schools offering hundreds of programs across the country, with
golf instruction on full swing, chipping, pitching, putting, bunker
play, mental preparation, course strategy and any other aspect of
the game you can think of. There are corporate golf programs where
you can experience a combination of expert golf instruction and
timely business presentations. The whole family can attend golf
school vacations where golf instruction is available to men, women,
juniors, and seniors. U.S. golfers can receive golf instruction from
professionals certified by the Professional Golfers Association or
the United State Golf Teachers' Federation, study books or
magazines, use trial-and-error on the course, buy golf training aids
or get tips from practically anyone.
