Garmin G5 GPS

Pros: Nice Features, tough unit
Cons: Slow to settle to a distance
Recommended: Yes
I bought this to replace my failed Callaway UPro. The touch screen is nice and works well. The unit is very sturdy and can be dropped. It has all my local courses in Indiana. However, sometimes the unit is slow to settle to a distance. The yardage keeps "hunting" and changing. Eventually it gets there, but sometimes it is too slow. I still recommend the unit.

I have owned pretty much every golf gps unit on the market and the Garmin Approach G5 is hands down the best unit out there. I love how durable it is. If you drop it on the fairway, you don't have to worry about it breaking due the craftsmanship put into it. I highly recommend the Garmin.

Garmin Approach G5 Golf GPS Review

I bought this GPS because I thought my SonoCaddie GPS was lost. I ended up finding it (after I purchased the G5), and to make a long story short, my boy has the (old)SonoCaddie and I have the G5 :) Right off the bat I knew this was a well built unit, just from the heft/feel of it. The first time I used it was in the first tournament I ever played in that wasn't a captain's choice. Although there isn't any way to "edit" distances, I found the pre-loaded courses to be very accurate. The ability to calculate your second shot on Par 5's is awesome and zooming in on the green and being able to adjust the flag is great as well. Another cool thing is being able to look up courses and preview each hole as well as finding local courses while on travel. I'm not sure how long the batteries last (I'm using rechargeable) because I played about 4 rounds with it and haven't played again, but I still have a charge. It probably would be nice if it had a battery indicator to let you know how close it is to dying, but I just have a spare set of akaline batteries on hand just in case. So to sum it all up, if your looking for a great golf GPS and you need something on your Xmas list (so you don't get another tie) this is the unit for you.

Weak Course Selection
By Jim Mathes from Springfield, IL US on 06/08/2009

The Approach appears to have excellent features but it does no one much good if they do not have any local course selections. The closest system course to the capital of Illinois is 56 miles aware. Garmin says that you can ask for more courses which I tried to do via their on-line system and by emailing Garmin. I finally got an email response saying they only update the course selections once a quarter. Garmin did not even tell me when that was nor whether or not they'd be updating any of my requested courses or not. Pretty bogus, hey?
